The high-speed connection between Murcia and Cartagena takes a significant step forward with the starting of construction on the Torre Pacheco - Cartagena section, carried out by SANJOSE Constructora in partnership with Sorigué.

SANJOSE Constructora and Sorigué have started work on the High-Speed Rail Platform linking Torre Pacheco and Cartagena, ensuring the continuity of the Madrid-Levante line.

Awarded by Adif with a contract value of €128.4 million, the project involves the construction of a dual-track platform spanning 8.96 km, running parallel to the existing Chinchilla-Cartagena conventional gauge line.

The project also includes the construction of a viaduct, a 750m siding on the conventional line, and the execution of seven overpasses.

Challenges of the Project

The project is highly complex as the route needs to be carefully integrated into an irrigation farming area, crossing roads and highways, while also reinforcing the terrain’s transverse drainage system to prevent flooding during heavy rainfall events.

One of the first tasks of the project involves the replacement of the stretch Chinchilla–Cartagena, which is prone to flooding, by constructing two viaducts, each 210 metres long, over the Rambla del Albujón.

Additionally, as the level crossing on the RM-311 road is removed, a new overpass will be built to cross both the existing line and the new high-speed platform.

New overpasses will also be built to manage the intersection of the AP-7 motorway and the A-30 dual highway with the two railway lines. Four additional overpasses will be constructed along the new high-speed line, ensuring the smooth flow of traffic and livestock routes through the farming area to allow for communication on both sides of the railway.

Another critical aspect is the construction of a 750-metre siding near the Pozo Estrecho industrial estate to facilitate train crossings and the parking of freight trains travelling along the conventional Chinchilla-Cartagena line, thereby boosting freight traffic in the area.
